For Patients
To lose your hearing, or have a friend or family suffer from hearing loss, is a very difficult circumstance. Society at large does not fully comprehend how difficult it is to live with hearing loss. Nanoear, however, is focussed on early stage development of nanoparticle therapeutics and we are still some time away from clinical use. We are still looking at the fundamentals of where the nanoparticles go within the inner ear, whether they cause toxicity and further damage, and whether they are useful for therapeutics.
Any new therapeutic takes time and so we will not be looking for human subjects for a while. Unfortunately there is no short term solution, and we can only suggest to keep an eye on the topics in the field of "nanomedicine". For general research areas, Pubmed is a good, free, place to find latest research information (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/), and starting with reviews on the topic is a good way to work into the relevant literature. Our scientists work hard to come up with solutions using nanotechnology and only methodical and rational science will appease the necessary regulatory bodies that monitor new treatments.
That said, the cochlear implant is still an excellent product. Companies such as Med-El have currently available devices that has a history of effectiveness. While our nanotherapeutics are in the formative stage, immediate assistance is best provided through your specialist physician.
